Caracal Silicon Carbide Wafers

A Revolution in Electronics

Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a wide bandgap semiconductor with the potential to dramatically improve energy efficiency in a wide range of industries, including lighting, power electronics, and telecommunications.

Fundamental material advantages of silicon carbide over the most common semiconductor – silicon - allow silicon carbide electronic devices to operate at substantially higher temperatures, voltages, and power levels.  The combination of these strengths translates into smaller, lighter, and simpler electrical systems.

The benefits of widespread silicon carbide usage will be enormous.  In the lighting area alone, the Department of Energy estimates that solid state lighting – a prime silicon carbide application – could reduce U.S. electricity expenditures by a cumulative $125 billion from 2005 to 2025.
